Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Posted by almax on May 19, 2007

We’ve seen a lot of exciting games over the last ten days or so - various play-offs, and the UEFA Cup Final etc.

The FA Cup Final at the new Wembley today was cack.

I confess, however, that I didn’t see the whole game - I missed an hour when I had to go away urgently to watch some paint drying.

This sort of tripe will kill football.

[...] It must’ve been a rough morning for our pal David Hirshey. Not only did Chelsea get a 1-0 win when Didier Drogba scored in extra time, but it came at the end of a game that’s been described as “rubbish football” and “cack.” [...]

It was probably as bad as the average Junior Cup final - it was that awful.Chelsea’s attritional grind was as expected. However whither the wunderkids Rooney and Ronaldo ? Are they really the “best in the world” as Fergie and others have led us to believe. If so, we may as well cancel the finals of Euro 2008 before we fall into a collective coma.

A good baptism for the Wembley Stadium stadium indeed, especially the FA Cup earned by a London team trouncing the team from Manchester(?)

Undoubtedly one of the worst Cup finals of any tournament I have ever witnessed. Unfortunately I have a sneaking suspicion that Wednesdays Champions league final will serve up something pretty similar. Two teams more intent on stopping the oppositions flair players than actually winning the game. I hope they prove me wrong.

It is of course testimony to the current competitiveness of the game in England that a wee team with a relatively undistinguished history can emerge out of nowhere and overcome the mighty, double seeking, Man U. in a final like this. The biggest shock since Wimbledon humbled Liverpool methinks. Ah, the romance of the Cup.

    Strange But True Dept :

This brief posting recording the result of yesterday’s FA Cup Final and expressing my disappointment at the standard of play HAS ATTRACTED MORE HITS in 24 hours than any other posting over the 15 months or so that this blog has been running.

    Go figure

Couldn’t agree more. Perhaps if the game had a Champions League place up for grabs then teams might make it more hard faught, but on the other hand, the cost of loosing would increase so perhaps neither would want to loose an play even more defensively …

    Stuart

Before the game I had foolishly thought it might be a bit of a classic - I genuinely thought that since Man Utd were already champions they could afford to play in a buccaneering, who-gives-a-toss-if-we-lose-we’re-the-champions, let’s-put-on-a-show-for-the-new-Wembley kind of way, which in turn would prompt Chelsea to match them as a matter of pride - how wrong could I possibly be.

Obviously I’m just a dinosaur-like, jackets-for-goalposts, Corinthian spirit old fart.

Modern football at the top level is a joyless thing.
